The tradition of the accounting and business camp for underrepresented youth continued this summer. The Careers in Accounting and Management Professions program or C.A.M.P. was founded in 1998 by the Massachusetts Society of Certified Public Accountants (MSCPA). Rick Gulman, Co-Founder of DGC, and his wife Susan began co-sponsoring C.A.M.P. in 2007.
This year, a group of 23 high school juniors and seniors attended C.A.M.P. This program provides underrepresented high school students with a free residential program where they can learn more about the field of accounting and other business-related professions.
During the week of July 23rd, students were able to attend classroom lectures, participate in hands-on activities, and visit various businesses. During a day trip to Boston, students attended a Real World CPA panel. They also toured Fenway Park and met with the CFO of the Red Sox, Tim Zue.
“My wife and I love how C.A.M.P. provides this opportunity to minority students who would not otherwise be exposed to the endless possibilities associated with a career in accounting or business simply because of their background or environment,” Gulman said. “We are amazed at the enthusiasm, passion and engagement of the campers and counselors each time we visit with them. I have no doubt these students can have successful careers in our industry. Programs like this not only improve diversity, but also attract very motivated and resourceful talent.”
Data from the American Institute of CPAs shows that minorities represent only one in six professionals in accounting firms nationwide, a statistic the profession hopes to change. Additionally, accounting is often a second-generation career—people with CPAs for parents often also go into accounting. To expand the pool of future CPAs, the MSCPA supports programs like C.A.M.P.
